LYHBeyond project featured in Municipal Sewer & Water magazine

Lynchburg’s Blackwater CSO Tunnel project, called LYHBeyond, is the cover story in the March edition of Municipal Sewer & Water, a national magazine for sewer, stormwater, and water system professionals. The article highlights the City’s holistic approach to controlling Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) over the past 45 years, which has resulted in cost savings for citizens and meeting water quality goals faster than expected.

Timothy Mitchell, director of Lynchburg Water Resources, is pictured on the cover and quoted throughout the article.

“Being proactive has served us well, from negotiating favorable terms in our consent order (twice), shaving years off the program, saving millions of dollars, positioning us to take advantage of state and federal funding opportunities, and allowing us to achieve our water quality goals much sooner,” he said.

The Blackwater CSO Tunnel project is the largest capital improvement project in the city’s history, the capstone of Lynchburg’s 45-year CSO program, and the most impactful project to date in protecting the Blackwater Creek and James River from sewer overflows.
