Construction underway at 7th Street location; section of Point of Honor Trail closes
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Construction of the shaft that will lead down to the Blackwater CSO Tunnel is well underway at the eventual location of the Downtown CSO Pump Station at the bottom of 7th Street in Downtown Lynchburg. Atkinson Construction crews have just completed driving sheet piles into the ground to form the shaft’s perimeter and will continue work at the site to prepare for drill-and-blast operations expected to begin in November.
Work is also underway around the CSO 52 site on the Point of Honor Trail. To facilitate this work, a section of the Point of Honor Trail will be closed. Between October 1, 2024 and continuing until July 2026, the Point of Honor Trail will be closed from Hollins Mill Road to the entrance at the footbridge below Cabell Street.
Coming up: The City of Lynchburg will host a groundbreaking ceremony for LYHBeyond: The Blackwater CSO Tunnel project on October 29, formally kicking off the largest capital improvement project in the city’s history and the most impactful project to date in protecting Lynchburg’s cherished waterways. The groundbreaking is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the construction site at 16 7th Street near U.S. Pipe.
